#7: Sustainability in the semiconductor industry
Shownotes
Energy consumption in the global semiconductor industry has more than doubled in recent years. Up to 300 different chemicals are needed to produce chips and some fabs consume up to 38 million litres of water a day.
If Europe actually achieved the targeted market share of 20 percent, we would be talking about CO₂ emissions of around 100 million tonnes per year - more than any other industry in Europe currently produces.
Sustainability in the semiconductor industry - this is not a niche topic in Europe and especially in Saxony, where capacities are being significantly expanded. It is one of the key issues when it comes to Europe's industrial future. But where - between the obligation to report and the pressure to innovate - will it be decided how sustainable the semiconductor industry is and will be?
This is exactly what host Julia Nitzschner discusses with her three guests, who are not only familiar with the regulatory requirements, but also work every day on reducing emissions, making processes more efficient - and turning sustainability from a buzzword into a strategy.

###Interview with Holger Hasse (Infineon)
30,000 square metres of clean room, 450,000 cubic metres of excavated earth, 2,000 people on the construction site - the dimensions of the Smart Power Fab in Dresden are impressive. What is even more impressive is that one of the largest construction sites in Germany is growing in record time while remaining sensitive to the environment, surroundings and ongoing high-tech production. In this interview, site manager Holger Hasse explains how mega dimensions and micro-precision come together under the ‘zero defect’ principle.
